A Nemasket River Story
At only eleven miles long, the Nemasket River is easy to think of as “small,” but this natural waterway from Assawompset Pond to the Taunton River provides the largest run of herring and alewives on the east coast with a passage from their fresh water spawning grounds to the salt water of Narragansett Bay. This yearly migration has drawn humans throughout history, and “A Nemasket River Story” weaves an oral history that looks back to the earliest human interactions with the river, while providing an overview of the issues facing The Nemasket today.
